Delta cancels meal service on more than 200 Detroit flights over food safety issue

I just read this article on CBS News that Delta need to cancel meal services on more than 200 Delta Air Lines flights out of Detroit Metropolitan Airport. As you may know, Detroit is a major hub for Delta so this cancellation impacted a whole of people. The reason they are citing is due to a "food safety issue" following a routine Food and Drug Administration inspection of the facility.

"During a recent inspection at a DTW [Detroit Metro Airport] kitchen, Delta's catering partner was notified of a food safety issue within the facility. Delta and its catering partner immediately shut down hot food production and subsequently suspended all activity from the facility," the airline said in a statement to CBS News.

I started to wonder if this was a bad thing or a good thing in disguise. It is always a bad thing if you find out that food being served to customers is tainted and may cause illness. I am glad they caught it before anyone became sick. As you may recall, back in July, Delta served passengers moldy chicken meals on flight from Detroit to Amsterdam, that sickened several customers, forcing the flight to make an emergency landing in New York.

On why this may be a good thing in disguise, Delta's on board food is not that great. With some advance notice and meal credit, customers can actually bring or purchase food that could be tasty and more nutritious. I do not know anyone who gets excited to eat airplane food and airports definitely sell better food than you receive on the plane.

Delta will change how they prepare their food to comply with food safety services and resume meal service on flights.
