Has Tipping Reached The Airlines?
Just when you thought that tipping creep reached it limits, we have a new set of folks looking for tips. The airlines. No, not the pilots. But maybe down the road, they will ask for tips so that the plane could be on time or less turbulent. That would be nice. Actually thinking about it, I would definitely pay up for improved performance by pilots. Something to think about.
I was reading an article on Fodor’s Travel regarding tipping Flight Attendants. Most airlines prohibit flight attendants from receiving tips and Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants says you should not tip flight attendants. Her rationale is that the primary duty of flight attendants is to ensure the safety of the passengers and the concept of tipping undermines their primary responsibility. I am on board with that.
However, Frontier Airlines has added a tipping screen to their beverage ordering system. Now passengers are stuck with the dilemma on whether to tip their flight attendants in addition to all their other tipping requests. My take is no tips for flight attendants. But who know when the major airlines will start to copy this tipping approach.
I understand tipping baggage handlers and the wheelchair support staff but that is about it. No need to tip the ticketing agent, gate agent, flight attendant or even pilots. Out of all of these people, I would want to tip the pilot for improved performance.
