When Traveling, Venture Out Beyond A Burger and a Turkey Sandwich

When Traveling, Venture Out Beyond A Burger and a Turkey Sandwich
Scorpion Suckers from Phoenix International Airport

I have been to a whole bunch of airports where the food options are limited to a Burger King and Panda Express. While I do enjoy those food establishments when I am drunk, I would like a greater variety of food choices. In fact, once I decide to travel, I like to consider it an adventure and as such, I can venture out of my comfort zone and try new foods. I have to note that I saw a friend eating sushi at an Airport in Aruba. This is a bridge too far for me.

After some research and experience, here are some of the most unusual foods you can find at US airports:

1. Lobster Rolls at Portland International Airport: Maine is known for its lobster, and Portland International Airport takes full advantage of this local delicacy. You'll find several vendors offering fresh lobster rolls, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal before your flight. A lobster roll in Maine even at the airport will be better than most lobster rolls you can find across the country.

2. Alligator at New Orleans International Airport: If you're feeling adventurous, try some alligator at New Orleans International Airport. This Cajun staple is a unique and flavorful snack that's sure to satisfy your curiosity. I was looking for alligator cheesecake like I had in downtown New Orleans but I was unable to find it. Maybe next time.

3. Scorpion Suckers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport: These sucking candies offer a unique flavor and is worthy of buying even if you do not want to try them. They make great gifts especially with the kids.

4. Elk Burgers at Denver International Airport: Colorado is known for its elk meat. Who knew? I had a layover and found the elk burgers on a menu and had to try them. It is a unique and flavorful option for those seeking something different. Definitely leaner than a hamburger.

5. Poutine at Toronto Pearson International Airport: This Canadian dish, made with French fries, gravy, and cheese curds is a staple in Toronto. I know Canadian expats that will travel all around the USA to find great tasting Poutine. Good Luck. You can find poutine at several restaurants in Toronto Pearson International Airport.

6. Sushi Burritos at San Francisco International Airport: This fusion dish combines the best of sushi and burritos. It's a fun and flavorful option for those looking for something a bit different. As you would expect, San Francisco would step it up for their sushi in the airports.

7. Smoked Salmon Sandwiches at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: Seattle is known for its fresh seafood, and you can find delicious smoked salmon sandwiches at several restaurants in the airport. I would have loved a salmon jerky like I tried in Seattle but you can not always get what you want.

8. Deep-Fried Oreos at Chicago O'Hare International Airport: This indulgent treat is a classic American dessert, and it's sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. This should be a staple at every airport in USA.

9. Frito Pie at Albuquerque International Airport: This New Mexican dish is made with Fritos corn chips topped with chili, cheese, and onions. It's a hearty and flavorful meal that's perfect for fueling your travels. My take on it is that while Frito Pie is a great dish, this is not the kind of food you want to eat before a 6 hour flight home.

10. Hawaiian Poke Bowls at Honolulu International Airport: Poke bowls, made with fresh raw fish, rice, and vegetables, are a popular Hawaiian dish. You can find several options at Honolulu International Airport, perfect for a light and refreshing meal before your flight. This is a great alternative to a Frito Pie!

So, the next time you're traveling through a US airport, don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. Just remember that you may be cooped up on a flight for 5 or 6 hours so you may want to avoid some food that you will regret later like Sushi in Aruba!!
